In brief: What’s to be done about Generative AI being used to imitate celebrities and creators? It seems to be too legally complicated to trademark your face or copyright your voice. But I find there may be a simpler way to legally protect our appearance against Deep Fakes, through technology-neutral data protection law. Generating likenesses of people without their permission could be a privacy breach. More here.

I reflected on the early experience of the Microsoft Tay chatbot, which learned unrestrained profanity from Twitter, and had to be terminated by its operators. If Tay was a toddler, we would sit her down and explain how what she said was wrong. We would have turned the poor experience into a teachable moment. But a critical shortcoming of AI is it has no genuine teachable moments out in the real world.
