The limits to Federated Identity

6 Sep 12: An updated slide deck on the ecological limits to Federated Identity.

I've long been a critic of federated identity. Yet some of the best people I know are working hard on NSTIC. These people are not wrong!

We would probably all agree here are limits to how far we can take Federated Identity. I have speculated before, purely emprically, that there is a natural optimum number of identities. An ecological approach might illuminate what that number actually is, and whether or not it's amenable to change.

I'm working further on my memetic theory of identity, to expose the ecological constraints on federation, and to see if federating attributes might be a fruitful middle road.

An updated slide deck introducing the ecological approach is here: "The Natural Limits to Federated Identity".
